Why private speech therapy for your child?
Children in the public school setting will receive therapy in a group, with three to five other children, typically for a period of 30 minutes. In a thirty minute session, that time will be divided between the number of children in the group.
So if your child is in a group of four, he/she will possibly receive 15 minutes of speech therapy during that time. Because of this, it will generally take much longer to correct speech misarticulations in the school setting, going on for years and years, as compared to one-on-one private speech therapy, with quicker improvements.
Children in the school setting in Colorado, may receive speech therapy services from a speech therapy assistant, who has an associate degree with two years of training. Many parents do not realize that a speech assistant is providing services to their child. School districts employee speech therapy assistants to save money. Some states do not permit the use of speech pathology support personnel.
Licensed speech therapists have a masters degree, with private speech therapist typically have many years of clinical experience and a plethora of knowledge that positively impacts instruction and progress for children in speech therapy. Additionally, private speech therapists are able to work closely with parents toward a child’s speech goals.
